First: is this an emergency or a project?
These are different calls, and mixing them up costs time. A remodeling provider is built for planned work: measuring, ordering, scheduling and building. An emergency is something that can't wait for that.
If water is actively leaking
Shut off the water to that fixture, or to the whole house at the main shutoff if you can't isolate it. Turn off electricity to the area if water is near outlets or fixtures and it's safe to do so. Then call a licensed emergency plumber. We're a remodeling referral service and don't provide emergency repairs. Once the leak is fixed and dried out, call us to plan the remodel properly.
Slow leaks, stained ceilings below a bathroom and soft floors are different. They're urgent but not instant, and they're typically the reason people decide to remodel. Mention them when you call so the provider can prioritize.
How to move fast without cutting corners
- Call and describe the project in a minute or two. Room size, what's wrong, what you'd like and your timeframe. That's enough for us to connect you with a provider.
- Send photos before the visit. Photos from each corner of the room help a provider arrive prepared.
- Choose key selections early. Vanity, tile, glass and fixtures have lead times. The earlier you choose them, the sooner a schedule firms up.
- Ask about the realistic start date. Some providers are booked weeks ahead. Others can start sooner but may have limited availability later.
- Get everything in writing. A schedule, a price and a scope. Illinois law requires a written contract for remodeling work over $1,000.
What takes time, and what doesn't
| Part of the project | Timing notes |
|---|---|
| Quoting | Often quick once a provider has seen photos or visited. |
| Permits | Needed for plumbing, electrical or structural changes. Drawings are required, and the city doesn't issue the permit until subcontractors are named. |
| Ordering materials | Stock items are fast; special-order tile, custom vanities and glass take longer. |
| On-site work | Depends on scope. Tile and waterproofing need curing time. |
| Glass | Usually measured after tile is finished, then fabricated. |
Projects that tend to move faster
Keeping the existing layout avoids plumbing relocations and extra inspections. Choosing in-stock items shortens waits. A simple bathtub replacement or a vanity swap, covered on our vanity and cabinet installation page, can be quicker than a full gut. A tub to shower conversion sits in the middle: contained but still involves plumbing and waterproofing. Faster doesn't mean sloppy. It means narrower scope.
Busy schedule? Make decisions once
- Choose one person in the household to approve changes.
- Ask your provider about a single point of contact and a shared text thread for questions.
- Agree on a daily schedule for access, so you don't have to be home for everything.
- Decide your budget limit before you shop and stick to it.
Permits and licensing
If plumbing or electrical systems are touched, the City of Naperville expects a residential alteration permit. Plumbing contractors submit a State of Illinois license, and electricians must be licensed and registered with the city. Schedule inspections in advance, since the city asks for at least 72 hours' notice. See the City of Naperville residential alteration guidance.
